MYSURU: A scheduled meeting of the search committee constituted to shortlist possible candidates for the post of the University of Mysore (UoM) vice-chancellor has been postponed, thereby prolonging an already long wait for a full-time VC for the varsity. The search panel was scheduled to meet on Saturday, but owing to a delay in obtaining the chief minister’s approval, it has been put off indefinitely.Sources said that the Karnataka higher education department had decided to schedule the meeting on June 23, and all the members of the committee were duly informed about the same. However, since the chief minister’s office did not approve of the date, the officials and the panel members were left with no option but to postpone the meeting. The UoM VC search committee member VB Cutino confirmed to TOI that the meeting had been put off. “I was contacted by the higher education department, who asked me when I would be available on Saturday, and I had responded. But, I have now been informed that the meeting has been postponed,” Cutino said. The search panel is headed by former VC of Visvesvaraya Technological University , Belagavi HP Khincha. UoM has been without a full-time VC since Prof. KS Rangappa demitted office in January 2017. Five professors of the varsity have served as in-charge VCs in this period.Sources said that JD(S) senior leader GT Devegowda’s apprehensions over taking up the position of the minister for higher education have only added to the delay. “Initially, we approached the minister seeking permission to hold the meeting. When he did not agree, we approached the CM’s office. However, the CMO did not approve Saturday’s meeting, and it has been postponed indefinitely,” said a higher education department official, privy to the developments.Another official in the department said that it would be hard to reschedule another meeting, since it was not easy to get all four members of the panel on the same day. “The nominee from the University Grants Commission has to come to Karnataka from New Delhi. We were really expecting the government to approve the meeting on Saturday. But, we are hopeful of an early solution to this problem once a new minister is appointed,” he added.
