Thieves pose as MCC officials, rob senior citizen

Mysuru: Thieves looted valuables from a house in Kuvempunagar ‘N’ Block here on Friday after posing as civic official.They came on two-wheelers, wielding measurement tapes, a bundle of files, surveyed the house and then decamped with valuables worth lakhs of rupees. They told property owner Leeladevi that they were issuing property cards to residents and want to measure the place.Leeladevi, a senior citizen who stays with a domestic help, said more than 300gm of gold valuables went missing from the house which is located on the busy main road. The incident around noon has left neighbours aghast.Kuvempunagar police said this modus operandi is the first of its kind in Mysuru city. “We’re checking similar cases across the state. There have been several thefts after people’s attention was diverted or conmen claiming to the policemen.”Cops said: “Leeladevi said two youths in their late 20s came to her house on a two-wheeler but we suspect one or two others were involved in the crime.”Leeladevi told STOI that two youths came to her house around 11.30am and claimed to be MCC employees. “They said they wanted to measure the house and said MCC is issuing property cards to owners. I didn’t suspect them as they took measurements outside the building and made notes. When they said they wanted to take measurements inside the house and on the terrace. While one youth spoke Kannada, the other spoke in Urdu.”She said the house was built nearly two decades ago. “The youths came down and were about to leave. But they wanted to check the water tank. I couldn’t climb up again but I agreed to their request. I was with them throughout their stay, for about an hour. I suspect another member of the gang entered the house when we were on the terrace,” she said.She added, “After they left, I was confused on seeing the almirah doors open. The cover of my medicine box was open and I saw a pair of bangles missing. I rushed outside and informed police through my neighbour.” Police said she claimed only two bangles were missing but later, she came with another list of missing valuables.DCP (crime) Mahanand Nandagavi said they’re investigating and verifying the list of offenders involved in similar offences, if any.
