En route to the school at Kurahatti, the van collided with an auto, and the driver of the former vehicle Kantaraj, 36, died on the spot. On learning about the accident, Nanjangud MLA B Harshvardhan rushed to the taluk hospital, where some of the injured students were undergoing treatment.

On the other hand, the remaining six students suffered grivous injuries, and had to be admitted to a private hospital in Mysuru city, and discharged in the evening. Nanjangud rural police, who have registered a case, said that 15 students of Sri Gurukula Vidya Kendra School, Hemmaragal were travelling to their school by the van on Monday morning. En route to the school at Kurahatti, the van collided with an auto, and the driver of the former vehicle Kantaraj, 36, died on the spot. A few students were jolted out of the van by the impact. Nanjangud block education officer M Narayana confirmed to TOI that the 12 students who were injured in the accident were admitted to a private hospital in Mysuru. "They were discharged in the evening. I subsequently took the kids home myself. They are recovering," said Narayana. On learning about the accident, Nanjangud MLA B Harshvardhan rushed to the taluk hospital, where some of the injured students were undergoing treatment. He directed local civic officials to take measures to prevent accidents in the future. The deceased driver, Kantaraj was a resident of Kumbralli, and is survived by his wife and two children. His body was handed over to his family after a postmortem was conducted. Deputy director of public instruction, Mysuru, Mamata visited the kids at the private hospital. Meanwhile, residents of Nanjangud attributed the accident to speeding. "Last year, more or less at the same spot, a private school van met with an accident. There is no mechanism to control speed on these vehicles, nor a limit on the number of students," a few locals rued.
