Mysuru man sentenced to life for setting ablaze live-in partner

She was set ablaze by her partner Krishnamurthy, 37, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment, following a quarrel. He doubted her fidelity and frequently quarrelled over the issue, said public prosecutor Mahanthappa.Both Krishnamurthy and Suvarna had abandoned their spouses. However, Suvarna in her dying declaration, which was videographed, had accused Krishnamurthy of killing her.The VII additional district and sessions judge C Chandrashekar awarded him life sentence on Thursday, said the public prosecutor. MYSURU: A man who tortured his live-in partner with cigarette butts and then set her ablaze has been sentenced to life in jail by a city court on Thursday.Suvarna, 31, died days after she was set afire at a government-run hospital on September 25, 2014. She was set ablaze by her partner Krishnamurthy, 37, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment, following a quarrel. He doubted her fidelity and frequently quarrelled over the issue, said public prosecutor Mahanthappa.Both Krishnamurthy and Suvarna had abandoned their spouses. The duo befriended and then started living together.Mahanthappa said Krishnamurthy was suspecting her loyalty as she was always found talking over phone. He suspected her of having an affair with another man. On the day of incident, he came home early but didn’t find Suvarna. He calls her and asks her to come home immediately. However, Suvarna was at her brother’s home at that time.Krishnamurthy picks up a quarrel once she returns home. He harasses her and inflicts cigarette burns before setting her on fire. In a bid to escape from him, Suvarna comes out of the house and finds help in neighbours. She was later shifted to a hospital. Krishnamurthy was caught by fellow residents when he was trying to escape.Duty doctors had registered the case as suicide in one record and homicidal in another. However, Suvarna in her dying declaration, which was videographed, had accused Krishnamurthy of killing her.The VII additional district and sessions judge C Chandrashekar awarded him life sentence on Thursday, said the public prosecutor.
