Mysuru: The ‘Heritage City’ is not short of tourist attractions, but, there is always another building, or a natural spot, the potential of which remains unexplored. It is with the vision of adding to the tourist destinations of the city that the Mysuru Zoo has decided to revive Thippayyanakere (Thippayyana Lake), and turn the waterbody into a natural attraction among visitors along the lines of Karanji Lake.A decade ago, Karanji Lake was given a facelift, with facilities being made for boating, and it is now one of the favourite haunts among locals and visitors alike. Officials of the Mysuru Zoo are hoping to emulate the feat with Thippayyanakere. The lake, which is spread across 30 acres, is all set for a makeover, with the authorities planning to develop three parks around the waterbody. These parks will be classified in accordance with their vegetation – ‘Grasslands’, ‘forest’ and ‘wetlands’.In April, Mysuru Urban Development Authority (Muda) handed over the maintenance of three parks in the vicinity of Thippayyanakere to Mysuru Zoo. Led by the additional principal chief conservator of forests and member secretary of Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) BP Ravi, officials of the Mysuru Zoo decided to turn the waterbody, which was revived under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative a few months ago, into yet another destination for migratory birds, alongside Kukkarahalli and Karanji lakes. In a bid to preserve the natural beauty of the waterbody, zoo authorities have decided not to use cement. The roads within the lake premises too have been laid using gravel stones. As part of the greening efforts, as many as 1,500 saplings have been plated within the lake’s premises. Most of the saplings are of fruit trees, and are likely to serve as food for birds. The zoo authorities are also planning on introducing as many as 50,000 fish to the lake, besides providing facilities for boating, and creation of a Children’s park on all three islands. The plan is to simulate the ambience of a forest within the premises of the lake.Ravi told TOI that ZAK had been maintaining Thippayyanakere for the past four years. “Since then, we have been working to improve the condition of the lake, particularly when it comes to treating sewage water naturally. The main objective behind developing the lake is to ensure water conservation , and to provide another habitat for birds. We will try to keep the ambience very natural, like that of a forest. Once everything is ready, we will start planning for boating and other amusement activities for children,” he added.Ravi said that Mysuru deputy commissioner Abhiram J Sankar, who visited the lake recently, had expressed satisfaction with the ongoing revival activity at Thippayyanakere. Ravi added that the district administration would approach both the government, and private players, for funds if the need arose for providing better facilities at the lake.Ravi has entrusted the responsibility of the project to range forest officer Manjunath. The lake was provided a new lease of life under Automotive Axles’s CSR initiative.- R Uday Kumar
