Patients refusing treatment is a major reason for spike in TB cases

Every individual at the age of 50 years has TB bacteria in his body and due to immunity, the bacteria doesn't grow in him. From January 1, 2018 till July, the hospital received 1147 TB cases. When infected individuals spit sputum in public, there are high chances of other individuals inhaling the bacteria.When compared to previous years, there is a rise in TB cases in Mysuru. Awareness and counselling is necessary to bust myths and misconceptions surrounding TB, Suvarna added.Dr Virupakshappa, superintendent of PK TB Hospital, Sanatorium, told TOI that the hospital receives at least 60-80 cases every day. About 39% of the population of India has tuberculosis bacteria.Treatment supportersIn Mysuru district, more than 658 volunteers, both ASHA and Anganawadi workers, have been working as Treatment Supporters to TB patients.
