Of the 65 MCC wards, 31 have been reserved for women, of which 16 are for General category three for SCs and one for ST. MYSURU: It appears as though the dust surrounding the reservation of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) wards, and their delimitation , is far from settled. Agrahara (Ward 1) corporator BV Manjunath pointed out that the government must have reserved 33 seats for women, as opposed to 31.“In the final list, only 31 wards have been reserved for women. “The MCC elections will be held in September, when the term of the current council will end,” Mallesh said. Similarly, 13 seats ought to have been reserved for Dalits , but this is not the case.

MYSURU: It appears as though the dust surrounding the reservation of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) wards, and their delimitation , is far from settled. In the wake of the state government finalising the list of wards to be reserved for women – 31 – many associations have voiced their intention to move the court against what they dubbed ‘injustice’ to women and Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes (SCs/STs).The state government has also proceeded to announce the list of new wards that have been carved out of existing ones in accordance with the data of the 2011 Census in order to ensure equitable distribution of the city’s demographic. Of the 65 MCC wards, 31 have been reserved for women, of which 16 are for General category three for SCs and one for ST. Reservation of 31 seats for women, which is only a shade below 50% of the seats in the council, MCC is set to become one of the first urban municipalities in India to implement the decision. The state government announced the decision on Thursday.Along the same lines, 10 new seats have been reserved for SC/STs – seven for SCs and three for STs. However, not everyone is chuffed with the government’s decision. Agrahara (Ward 1) corporator BV Manjunath pointed out that the government must have reserved 33 seats for women, as opposed to 31.“In the final list, only 31 wards have been reserved for women. Similarly, 13 seats ought to have been reserved for Dalits , but this is not the case. This is a form of grave injustice towards women and Dalits,” he told TOI.Manjunath further alleged that the officials who were entrusted with tabulating seats for reservation and delimitation did not consider the data of the 2011 Census. “When we sought a copy of the 2011 Census data they had used as guidelines through an RTI query, they did not furnish it,” he said.Former mayor and JL Nagar (Ward 12) corporator BL Bhyrappa has also expressed reservations over the reservation and delimitation processes. Pointing out that many private and Mysuru Urban Development Authority (Muda) layouts, now under MCC’s jurisdiction, were not considered for delimitation, Bhyrappa said, “The list appears to have been prepared in a hurry.”Bhyrappa and other senior corporators also fear that citizen groups could move the court seeking justice for women and Dalits. Meanwhile, many corporators have decided to field relatives in the wake of many of their wards being reshaped or reduced owing to delimitation. However, Kuvempunagar (Ward 18) corporator KV Mallesh defended the delimitation and reservation processes. “The MCC elections will be held in September, when the term of the current council will end,” Mallesh said.
