Dedicated cycle lanes in Mysuru remain on paper

Mysuru: Six years after a proposal was mooted to create bicycle tracks and dedicated lanes exclusively for cyclists, the project appears to have died a quite death. They had laid crushed stones, but the work was left incomplete despite the road being reopened for traffic.The project of dedicated cycle lanes was mooted in 2012 when P S Vastrad was deputy commissioner of Mysuru. The meeting was adjourned without a decision being taken.Some officials who attended the meeting were doubtful if a dedicated track would achieve its purpose. They said marking of lanes would further shrink already congested roads and may inconvenience motorists.

The proposal was aimed at encouraging non-motorized transport in the city.Deputy commissioner Abhiram G Sankar chaired a meeting recently to discuss the project but the meeting was inconclusive. Officials of Mysuru City Corporation, TrinTrin operators and Greenwheel ride representatives attended the meeting.TrinTrin operators urged authorities to complete the track and mark out dedicated cycle lanes. While the issue was discussed at length, it yielded no results. The meeting was adjourned without a decision being taken.Some officials who attended the meeting were doubtful if a dedicated track would achieve its purpose. They pointed to the existing bicycle lane on Narasimharaja Boulevard near Administrative Training Institute and wondered if it was being used as it was designed to be.Officials say it is not a question of dedicating tracks or lanes, but one of usefulness. They said marking of lanes would further shrink already congested roads and may inconvenience motorists. However, TrinTrin operators pointed out that the number of users had recently crossed 10,000 registrations — evidence that there are many takers for cycles.When a part of Mirza Road — between Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Circle and the intersection of Shalivahana Road near Office of Commissioner of Police — was widened, MCC officials had marked an eight-foot area alongside the avenue trees ostensibly for a cycle lane. They had laid crushed stones, but the work was left incomplete despite the road being reopened for traffic.The project of dedicated cycle lanes was mooted in 2012 when P S Vastrad was deputy commissioner of Mysuru. It was decided that three to five feet of roads would be dedicated exclusively for cyclists and the lane would be painted yellow.Some roads including a part of JLB Road, Sayyajirao Road and Mysuru–Bengaluru Road were picked for the project. Krishnaraja Boulevard too was identified as an ideal place for lanes, but there has been no progress on the project.GR Suresh, MCC superintending engineer, admitted that the project was discussed at the meeting, but insisted it was not shelved. He promised to look into the issue of marking lanes for bicycle users.
