Childless couple donates land, offers to adopt orphans

Ponacha, a resident of Yavakapadi village, recorded a 45-second donation statement and sent it to the district administration, announcing that he would donate two acres of land. Over 3,000 houses are estimated to have been damaged in the flood and landslides but a final count is still on. But donations like land can only be done through a proper channel. This number is expected to go up in the coming days, district officials said. Ponacha announced that out of three acres of land he owns, the government can use two acres to construct houses.He also stated that as he doesn’t have children, he is ready to adopt any children orphaned in the flood and landslides.

MADIKERI: With the rain and water level receding, Kodagu district is slowly returning to normal, but identifying land for the homeless and displaced has become a big task for the district administration.A tribal couple has come forward to donate two acres of land for flood-affected families. Ponacha, a resident of Yavakapadi village, recorded a 45-second donation statement and sent it to the district administration, announcing that he would donate two acres of land. Ponacha announced that out of three acres of land he owns, the government can use two acres to construct houses.He also stated that as he doesn’t have children, he is ready to adopt any children orphaned in the flood and landslides. “I am ready to take care of orphan children and their future,” he said.According to the authorities, donations can be considered only if he approaches revenue department officers with valid documents. “It is a nice gesture. But donations like land can only be done through a proper channel. Before taking any decision on using his land, we need to consider several factors like whether the land is suitable for rehabilitation,” said an officer from the revenue department.Meanwhile, DC PI Sreevidya visited Suntikoppa relief centre where flood and landslide victims from Madapura, Hattihole and other areas are house. She interacted with the inmates and directed the authorities to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.According to the authorities, the number of people in relief centres has come down to 3,200 with several families returning to their homes.
