Mysuru: An unexpected reversal in their position has pushed 32 students, who were selected for BSc courses at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute ( MMCRI ) for the 2018-19 academic year, into a state of helplessness. Owing to a failure in communication between the higher education department and the college authorities regarding the change in selection rules has resulted in their admissions being annulled, and left them staring at an uncertain future. However, the students and their parents are mulling over legal options in order to correct such a grave error. The problem erupted after MMCRI authorities, who had already published the first list for three BSc courses – medical laboratory technology, imaging technology and respiratory care – under the previous system, wherein students were admitted directly based on merit, learnt that the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) had altered the riles for selection to the three courses. Under the new system, students have to apply for the course online, and seats are allotted by the KEA . However, MMCRI authorities were unaware that the new rules came into effect from this academic year and went ahead with the admission process. Consequently, the 32 students who were named in the first list enrolled at MMCRI by submitting the required certificates and paying their fees. While MMCRI has assured the aggrieved students that the fee will be reimbursed, what the latter fear is the bleak prospect of losing an entire year for absolutely no fault of their own.Vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Dr S Sachidanand said that the admission process to all medical courses was centralised in accordance with directions from the state government. Expressing regret over the plight of the students, he added, “They have no other option but to apply for the courses online, and appear for tests conducted by KEA. This system is being implemented in the larger interests of the students.”Meanwhile, students pursuing BSc at MMCRI, welcomed the new admission system which allowed candidates from across the state to apply, but expressed grief over the state of the 32 helpless students. “This will allow those outside Mysuru to learn about the allied courses offered at MMCRI, and apply to them,” said a student.
