Classes lost as teachers still deputed to relief centres

Meanwhile, 30 students at the centre have been allowed to continue their education at nearby Mookambika and Christ schools. Six additional teachers are being deputed by the education department. The Lokayukta also arranged for a bus for inmates to go to Kushalnagar town. As the Lokayukta visited the centres, authorities rushed to bring in more mineral water bottles.

MADIKERI: With Kodagu district still in a shambles, parents of college students and students themselves are worried that their studies could be affected, what with lecturers being posted on deputation as nodal officers at relief camps.Parents of students at Government Junior College on Thursday questioned Vijayan, the principal, on the absence of lecturers and warned of protests if classes are not conducted. They say more than two weeks of college have been lost to the natural calamity and it would be very difficult to cover the syllabus for forthcoming exams.Vijayan told TOI that his hands are tied and that the college was badly short-staffed even before the floods.“The education department filled only seven of the 21 posts for lecturers,” Vijayan said. “Still, the seven were covering all the subjects and doing hard work. Now, out of the seven, five have been deputed as nodal officers in relief camps. Of the two remaining lecturers, one lost his house in the calamity. Despite this, he is attending college. A consignment was sent from Mysuru to Kodagu on Saturday.Lokayukta pacifies inmates angered by shiftingOn a visit to relief camps in Kushalnagar on Thursday, Karnataka Lokayukta P Vishwanath Shetty had to pacify residents who were angered by authorities shifting inmates from one camp to the other. Around 266 victims from Madikeri and 137 from Suntikoppa were shifted to Kushalnagar Valmiki Bhavan, Ambedkar Bhavan and First Grade College Hall, which are all located near each other, on Tuesday. Ten inmates went back due to poor services. Residents complained of scarcity of water, halfboiled rice and food not being served on time. As the Lokayukta visited the centres, authorities rushed to bring in more mineral water bottles. Sixteen mobile toilets were provided in addition to the nine existing ones. The Lokayukta instructed the authorities to maintain the quality of food and ensure it reached residents on time. Meanwhile, 30 students at the centre have been allowed to continue their education at nearby Mookambika and Christ schools. Six additional teachers are being deputed by the education department.
