MYSURU: It is a line one often hears in movies, but when higher education minister GT Devegowda said it, the words seemed to ring just a tad bit truer – “Government officers, bureaucrats , teachers and politicians must send their children to government schools . That is how the schools will improve,” said Devegowda on Wednesday.Inaugurating the Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the district administration at Kalamandir, Devegowda expressed disappointment with teachers of government schools sending their kids to private institutions. “It is sad to see their lack of confidence in schools where they are the teachers. It must be made mandatory for all government employees, including ministers , to send their kids to government schools,” said Devegowda.Bemoaning the lack of commitment among those working in the education sector today, the minister said, “In the past, teachers had to walk miles to reach the school, and teach their students. When kids did not turn up, they took a keen interest in their welfare and rushed to the students’ homes to impart classes. However, block education officers (BEOs) and deputy directors of public instruction (DDPIs) do not show the same level of commitment.”Calling on teachers to submit a document outlining the requirements needed to be met to develop government schools, and improve the infrastructure at the same, Devegowda said, “Teachers should write to the respective BEO, who shall, in turn, convey the requirements to the DDPI. Subsequently, the authorities will bring the problem to the attention of the local legislators. Whether it is the Prime Minister or the President, all of them recall the days spent at their respective primary schools, and the role it played in their lives. Government school teachers must ensure that their students are imparted quality education.”The higher education minister also recalled the days Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as Teachers’ Day, had spent at Maharaja’s College in Mysuru.Teachers of government primary, higher primary and highs schools were felicitated on the occasion.Chamaraja MLA L Nagendra, Krishnaraja MLA SA Ramadas, MLC Marithibbegowda, Mysuru deputy commissioner Abhiram G Sankar, additional deputy commissioner T Yogesh, zilla panchayat president Nayeema Sultana and deputy director of public instruction Mamatha were among those present on the occasion.
