MADIKERI: An 11-year-old boy from Gaddehalla near Suntikoppa in Madikeri taluk died of asphyxiation on Friday evening after he got entangled in the rope of a swing he was playing on. The boy was alone at home at the time of the incident. The matter came to light only after his mother returned from work late in the evening.Suntikoppa police identified the deceased as Praveen, the son of Shekar , a dailywage labourer. Praveen was a Class 4 student of Gaddehalla Government Model School.According to police, after returning from school on Friday evening, Praveen began to play on the swing, hung on a tree near his house. “While playing, he lost control and got entangled in the rope. He died on the spot due to asphyxiation. There was no one at home to help him,” said an officer.Villagers remembered Praveen as an active boy. “He had been playing on the swing for days. It did not appear so dangerous. Nobody was around to help him on Friday,” said a villager. Though Praveen was rushed to hospital, doctors declared him brought dead.Police registered a case of unnatural death. His body was handed over to the parents after a postmortem on Saturday.Meanwhile, several residents feel that the freak accident should come as an eyeopener for parents. “It’s common for children to play with ropes. Parents and the public in general should be more vigilant about such games,” said Suhas Gopu, a resident of Gaddehalla.
