‘Secularism in India present only in poems’

Mysuru: Lamenting the erosion of secular ethos in Indian society, noted Kannada writer Srikantha Koodige on Monday said, “Secularism in India is present only in poems, but it is absent in reality.”Koodige, who was the chief guest at the Dasara Pradhana Kavi Goshti organised at the Jaganmohan Palace, said, “Poets speak about secularism at length, but in India, even after 72 years since attaining Independence, we have not succeeded in becoming a secular society. Every morning, India witnesses crimes, and is peaceful at night. Perhaps, we are secular only at night. It was heartening to see poets reading out their works in Kodava, Sanskrit, Hindi, Konkani and Tulu languages.The poets’ meet was inaugurated by Mysuru district in-charge minister GT Devegowda, and acclaimed writer Sukanya Maruti presided over the event.
