Mysuru: Invoking the words of the 12th century reformer Basavanna, Indian Administrative Services ( IAS ) officer Ashok Dalwai on Sunday said, “Intelligence alone will not guide one to success. Basavanna once said, ‘Kayakave Kailasa (Work is worship)’ and without work, even worship will not be effective.”Dalwai, chief executive officer of the National Rainfed Authority in the Union ministry of agriculture and farmers’ welfare, delivered the Graduation Day address at the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering ( SJCE ), sought to highlight the contradictions that life was fraught with. “Life is easy and difficult. Our lives will be decided based on the contradictions we choose. Human beings are distinguished from other creatures on earth since we have the capacity to reason and think. It is only after graduating that students begin to learn about life,” he said.Citing another intellectual giant, Charles Darwin and popular novels such as ‘The Alchemist’ and ‘The Seagull’, Dalwai said, “In his ‘Theory of Evolution’, he spoke of how creatures evolved from amoeba to complex living beings such as humans. Parallel to this theory is another which states that human beings are capable of evolving themselves. Students too should evolve from being ordinary souls to extraordinary ones. They should not be moored, but explore strange things. One should be willing to think out-of-the-box and be different. Intelligence and madness is the best combination.”As many as 857 students were awarded the bachelors in engineering (BE) degrees, while two received the masters of technology (MTech), while 69 the masters in computer application (MCA), besides six, who walked home with masters of business administration.
