Most of the deceased are school students.According to the locals, the bus plunged in the canal around 12.25pm. The locals who saw the bus plunging in the canal water rushed to rescue the passengers."25 people have died. I believe the driver was not driving properly, I will find out, take some more inputs," said Karnataka deputy CM G Parameshwara.A boy who jumped out of the bus is the only survivor.Rescuers searching for bodies at the accident spot."There is no clarity on the number of deaths as all those who were inside the bus have died. Only the surviving boy can give us more details. But he is now in the state of shock," said police.According to the authorities, all the dead bodies will be sent to the MIMS medical college hospital for the postmortem.Senior police officers and the personnel from the fire and emergency services have rushed to the spot.Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy , who is also in Mandya, is likely to visit the accident spot soon. Chief minister has cancelled his state film award distribution ceremony which was scheduled today eveningDeputy chief minister G Parameshwara accounted driver's negligence for the accident and said he would look into the matter. Locals informed the police that the bus was in a bad shape.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who are campaigning in Madhya Pradesh, took to Twitter to mourn the death of the passengers.
