Mysuru: Pointing out that the length of the runway at the Mysuru Airport acted as a limiting factor against its use by larger aircraft, Mysuru MP Pratap Simha on Sunday said that work on extending the runway would commence in January.“There is demand for operating flights between Mysuru and Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, and other cities. But, there is a need to increase the length of the runway from the existing 1.7km to 2.7km. “Work on the 10-lane highway between Bengaluru and Mysuru will begin soon. The project was delayed since the airport is next to the railway station and a national highway. Owing to its short length, only small aircraft can be operated on the runway.

Owing to its short length, only small aircraft can be operated on the runway. But, there is a need to increase the length of the runway from the existing 1.7km to 2.7km. The project was delayed since the airport is next to the railway station and a national highway. However, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has received security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and the state government has initiated the process to acquire 300 acres of land,” said Simha, who was at the inauguration of Saalumarada Thimakka Park at Lingambudhi Lake.Stating that work on extending the runway would commence immediately upon completion of the land acquisition process, Simha opined that the expansion of the airport would turn Mysuru into the second capital of the state. The proposed railway projects aiming to improve connectivity between Mysuru, Mandya and the rest of the country would give the tourism industry in the region a huge boost, he said. “Work on the 10-lane highway between Bengaluru and Mysuru will begin soon. The project is estimated to cost Rs 700 crore, and is slated for completion by 2020. It will draw more tourists to Mysuru, and attract investment by industries,” the Parliamentarian said.Affirming that the Hinkal flyover would be inaugurated soon, he said that development of the Belikere-Belur highway and establishment of the Passport Seva Kendra were the other ventures that would enhance the city’s image.
