MYSURU: Speeding vehicles continue to be the biggest threat to wild animals inside the highly protected Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) in Chamarajanagar. On Sunday evening, a speeding Mercedes-Benz car ran over a five-year-old deer , which was crossing the road near Hirikati Gate in Gundlupet.The forest department confirmed it was a Mercedes-Benz car as its logo was found stuck on the body of the deer.The incident came to light on Monday morning. “A few locals who found the deer lying in a pool of blood near Hirikati gate alerted us. We rushed to the spot. We found that the car’s logo and a couple of other parts were stuck on the deer’s body,” said forest department officials.“The car was speeding and the deer was crushed under its wheels. It was flung on to the roadside by the impact,” he explained.“Unless and until police and the forest department come out with strict guidelines on speed of vehicles inside BTR, such incidents will continue,” he added.Ambadi Madhav, conservator of forest (CF- additional charge), BTR, confirmed the accident was caused by a speeding Mercedes Benz. “We’ve collected CCTV footage from Begur police who had kept a camera to monitor traffic on the road. It has visuals of the Mercedes-Benz. We have launched a probe,” he said.SP Rajesh, range forest officer (RFO) Gundlupet buffer zone, said the recovered Mercedes-Benz logo and a couple of other parts had the deer’s flesh stuck to it.“We have informed the company’s two authorised showrooms and service centres in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Coimbatore and Kochi to alert us in the event of any Mercedes car owner coming in for repair,” Rajesh said.
