Primary school students fare poorly in reading subtraction

Of students between Class 6 and Class 8, 60% students can't do division. Mysuru: More than half the students between Class 3 and Class 5 can't read a Class 2-level text. Mysuru: More than half the students between Class 3 and Class 5 can't read a Class 2-level text. Only 49% students of these classes can do subtraction . Of students between Class 6 and Class 8, 60% students can't do division. The only positive finding is that compared to 2016, the reading and mathematical skills of students from Mysuru division which comprises nine districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Mandya, Hassan, Kodagu, etc have improved slightly. These are the findings of the Annual Status of Education Report (Rural), 2018 (provisional), released on Tuesday by ASER Centre in New DelhiASER did the survey in all schools of the region in October and November 2018. The Department of Social Work (MSW) of the University of Mysore carried out the survey on behalf of ASER in Mysuru district.According to the provisional report, in Mysuru region, in 2016, only 35.3% students in classes between 3 and 5 were able to read Class 2-level text. It jumped to 43.7% in year 2018. But the percentage of students in these classes who can do subtraction came down to 51% from 52.1% in 2016.In 2016, 66.5% students between Class 6 and Class 8 were able to read a Class 2 text. It jumped to 70.3%. Similarly, the number of students who can do division jumped from 37.2% to 40.3%.Mysuru DDPI Mamata said her department is yet to receive a copy of the report.According to R Shivappa, associate professor of the social work department of Studies in Social Work, University of Mysore led the survey in Mysuru district on behalf of ASER Centre, said the findings were submitted in December 2018. "Sixty students of our department helped in this survey which was carried out in all schools of Mysuru district. We sent two students to a school for the study," he said."The MSW department of UoM has been doing this survey for the past five years," he said.
