UoM proposes increase in quota for students with disabilities

Mysuru: In a big relief to the students with various disabilities, the University of Mysore (UoM) has decided to increase the reservation for students with various disabilities from the existing 3% to 5% per department/ course.This means from the next academic year the number of seats under this quota will increase from the existing 15 to 30 at the Manasagangotri campus of the UoM. “Our aim is helping the students with various disabilities to join the mainstream,” he said.He also said that the reserved seats are not fully utilised in many departments. “Once the state government approves the proposal, we will implement the new reservation norms and age relaxation decision. The new reservation norm will be applicable to all the courses, colleges, and departments.In another major decision, the UoM also decided to provide five-year age relaxation for these candidates to join any course or college under UoM. “We want more and more students to join the post-graduation and other courses.

The new reservation norm will be applicable to all the courses, colleges, and departments.In another major decision, the UoM also decided to provide five-year age relaxation for these candidates to join any course or college under UoM. “These two major decisions have been taken by the university keeping in mind the importance of bringing the students with various disabilities to the mainstream of the society,” said a university official.According to sources in the academic wing of the university, a proposal in this regard has been sent to the state government for final approval. A letter has been written to the government as per the decision taken in the academic council meeting held in June 2018, which has also been approved by the university syndicate. “Once the state government approves the proposal, we will implement the new reservation norms and age relaxation decision. The number of seats will be doubled once the new reservation norm is implemented,” said a source.“Presently, no maximum age is fixed for post graduate admissions. But the five-year relaxation has been proposed to ensure that once the new rules are brought, students with various disabilities will not face any problem,” the source added.“As of now BA LLB and BCom LLB courses have age criteria for admission,” explained the source.Speaking to TOI, registrar R Rajanna confirmed that the UoM is trying to provide more opportunities for students with various disabilities. “Our aim is helping the students with various disabilities to join the mainstream,” he said.He also said that the reserved seats are not fully utilised in many departments. “We want more and more students to join the post-graduation and other courses. Presently, in many departments, these seats remain unfilled,” he added.
