Kin of girl missing after floods to get compensation

Madikeri: Nearly six months after a Class X student from Madenadu village disappeared in the flash floods that hit Kodagu, the state government has decided to give compensation to her relatives. According to the MLAs, compensation to the damaged crops is limited to two hectares. However, many lands got damaged in the floods and the landslide. The government is in the process of rebuilding 840 houses, the chief minister said. The girl’s family had failed to get any compensation as her body was never found.Setting aside norms, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday instructed officials to give compensation to the girl’s family at the first meeting of Kodagu Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Development Authority held in Bengaluru.A total of 500 houses collapsed and 662 others got damaged in the floods.

If any beneficiary has been left out due to oversight, he would also get help from the government, he added.MLAs K G Bopaiah and Apachu Ranjan, MLCs Sunil Subramani and Veena Achaiah attended the meeting. According to the MLAs, compensation to the damaged crops is limited to two hectares. However, many lands got damaged in the floods and the landslide. Hence the norms for compensation should be liberal, they demanded.The CM also instructed the deputy commissioner to discuss with stakeholders and submit a suitable proposal on a demand to relax restrictions on agricultural land conversion after the devastation in Kodagu.Tourism minister S R Mahesh, housing minister M T B Nagaraj, Authority secretary Baderiya and officials of various departments were present at the meeting.Kodagu DC Anies Kanmani Joy, zilla parishad CEO Lakshmipriya, ZP president B A Harish, SP Suman D P and others too attended the meeting.
