Mobile tower guidelines yet to be notified by Karnataka government

MYSURU: Even though urban development minister UT Khader announced a new registration system for mobile towers, telecom towers not being allowed within a 50-metre radius of hospitals and schools and a grievance redressal mechanism at the district level, the rule is yet to be implemented here. With the urban development department delaying a notification in regard to the new guidelines, mobile towers continue to pose a threat to children and patients. Meanwhile, the authorities said that with the state government yet to notify new rules, they are not in a position to take any action against mobile towers.The urban development department had announced that Karnataka will be the first state to implement guidelines for telecom tower installation. The government announced it would not allow towers near schools, hospitals and other public places. The government also assured the formation of a district-level grievance redressal committee under the chairmanship of deputy commissioners. The government also proposed annual fee for every mobile tower.However, the government has not notified the new guidelines, allowing mobile towers to continue operating from residential, school and hospital zones.
