Mysuru: Having sealed a pact with the JD(S) to stake claim to the mayoral post in the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Council, Congress is now bidding to attaining power in the zilla panchayat (ZP) in the district. Presently, the JD(S) is sharing power with the BJP in the Mysuru ZP, with the saffron party conceding the president’s post to the former. However, with elections to the ZP president’s post slated to be held towards the end of the month, the Congress, which emerged as the single largest party in the ZP elections held two years ago, is keen on extending its alliance in the assembly and MCC council to the ZP, thereby entrenching itself at all levels of the administration in the district. Two years ago, the JD(S) entered into an alliance with the BJP in the ZP to nudge the Congress out. However, the political equations in the state have since changed completely, and the alliances in local administrative bodies are being examined under an all together new light. While tourism minister and Periyaptna MLA SR Mahesh , whose brother SR Nandish is currently the in-charge president of the Mysuru ZP, favours continuing the alliance with the BJP in the panchayat, Mysuru district in-charge minister GT Devegowda is leaning towards the Congress.Congress members of the ZP, workers and other leaders led by Chamarajanagar MP R Dhruvanarayana on Wednesday held a meeting at the Jaladarshini Guest House to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming ZP presidential elections. The party’s members in the ZP and other workers informed the leadership that the JD(S) should extend its support to their party in the panchayat, besides conceding the president’s post for the Congress.“JD(S) should adhere to the norms of ‘Maithri (coalition) Dharma’. Congress and JD(S) are in an alliance in the assembly and fighting the Lok Sabha elections together to defeat the BJP. Moreover, two of the JD(S) legislators from Mysuru have been given cabinet berths. So, Congress, which is the single largest party in the ZP must be given the president’s post,” said a Congress worker during the meeting.Dhruvanarayana, after listening to the party workers, assured them of relaying their demands and grievances to the chief of the coalition coordination committee and former chief minister Siddaramaiah. “The former CM will raise the subject with the JD(S) president and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, and CM HD Kumaraswamy, and a final decision on the alliance in the ZP will be taken. But, Congress workers must abide by the decision taken by the leadership of the two parties,” said Dhruvanarayana.President of the Mysuru rural wing of the Congress BJ Vijaykumar said that a final decision on any possible arrangement between the Congress and JD(S) would be taken within two days. “Congress members should be ready to contest the election. ZP members from the Congress Achutananda, Ravishankar and Rakesh Papanna will lead the party in the ZP election,” Vijaykumar said.HD Kote MLA Anil Chikkamadhu, Karnataka Congress women’s wing president Pushpavathi Amarnath, secretary of the Mysuru rural wing of the party Basavaraja Naayak were present at the meeting held at Jaladarshini Guest House.
