Rail Museum in Mysuru to get facelift remain closed for three months

Mysuru: The Rail Museum , run by the Mysuru division of South Western Railways, will remain closed for three months owing to renovation work. Established in 1979, under the supervision of Indian Railway, the museum will get a facelift at a cost of Rs 2 crore. There are also plans for an audiovisual room, children’s play area and clock tower.Located opposite CFTRI, it is the second such facility in the country after the National Railway Museum in Delhi. During weekends, the inflow of tourists even crosses 1,000.One of the high points at the museum is a rare collection of carriages, belonging to the erstwhile Mysuru rulers. A lounge and cafeteria will come up at the museum and its entrance will be made more attractive with landscaping.

The aim is to give the museum a more attractive and make it more visitor-friendly.Official sources informed that the renovation includes Srirangam Pavilion. A lounge and cafeteria will come up at the museum and its entrance will be made more attractive with landscaping. There are also plans for an audiovisual room, children’s play area and clock tower.Located opposite CFTRI, it is the second such facility in the country after the National Railway Museum in Delhi. The museum is the only place in the country that houses an outdoor exhibit of vintage locomotives. It has collection of several steam locomotives and carriages. At an average, nearly 200-300 people visit the museum every day. During weekends, the inflow of tourists even crosses 1,000.One of the high points at the museum is a rare collection of carriages, belonging to the erstwhile Mysuru rulers. Visitors can have a look at two of the royal coaches used by the kings. This royal carriage dates back to 1899 and has a kitchen, dining car unit and royal toilet with wooden, western toilet facility.The museum also displays special purpose vehicles, wagons, telecommunication equipment, collection of rare black and white photographs, paintings, signal signs, lights, tickets, more than 100-year-old ceiling fan in running condition, clocks and several other subjects that depict the growth and development of railways in India.
