Now, Mata Amritanandamayi is all set to get yet another feather in her hat with the University of Mysore UoM ) set to confer the ‘Honoris Causa’ degree on the 66-year-old saint, who has won hearts the world over as the chief of a charity organisation that is active in 40 countries. The honorary degree will also be conferred on 65-year-old Karivrashabha Deshikendra Shivayogishwara Swami, the seer of the Somanakatte Sri Kadasiddeshwara Mutt in Nonavinakere, Tiptur in Tumakuru district.Karnataka minister for higher education GT Devegowda is expected to preside over the graduation ceremony, the varsity’s 99th, which will be held, according to custom at Crawford Hall on Sunday. UoM VC Prof G Hemantha Kumar on Friday said that the varsity administration had written to the Election Commission seeking permission for GT Devegowda’s presence at the event. “We were under the impression that the poll calendar would be announced in the third week of March, but since it was declared earlier, we have sought permission from the EC, and are awaiting a reply,” said the VC, adding that the Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala – the UoM chancellor – would not be present at the meeting.Meanwhile, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe will deliver the keynote address at the convocation ceremony, while vice-president of the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore BVR Chowdari will award degrees to the students.Kumar added that the honorary degree to Mata Amritanandamayi would be conferred to her in Kerala, since she was not attending the ceremony. Queried about the varsity’s choice of candidates for awarding the honorary degrees, Kumar said, “We sent a list of 14 personalities, which included cricketers, scientists, writers and religious heads to the governor. We had no role in the selection process.”Many teachers have retired, says VCThe University of Mysore (UoM) vice-chancellor Prof G Hemantha Kumar on Friday said that he had submitted a proposal to the government seeking approval to recruit 320 teachers. “The varsity has not appointed a full-time teacher since 2007. On the other hand, those appointed in the 70s and 80s have retired. We have lost more than 150 teachers to superannuation in the past five years. Consequently, research at the varsity has been affected since a faculty member cannot guide more than five research scholars. Research activity had come down last year, but it is improving, and we are publishing more than 500 papers every year,” he added.The UoM VC said that many non-teaching posts at the varsity were lying vacant too. “We are tiding over the problem with temporary personnel. Since the NAAC committee is slated to visit the varsity in January next year, and they will take a close look at the teacher to student ratio, among other parameters. We are awaiting orders from the government to recruit faculty members and non-teaching staff by November,” said Kumar.Prof Kumar, who is a professor of computer science, said that he wants to ensure Wi-Fi connectivity across the varsity’s multiple campuses, and said that he wanted to ensure automation and digitisation by 2020.UoM’s 99th convocation*28,163 students will be awarded degrees*384 researchers will be awarded PhD*368 medals will be awarded*182 cash prizes will be given
