As per Dr. KS Sadananda senior consultant and medical superintended, Jayadeva some or the other of their health care workers test positive every day. ‘’We are going through hard times’’ he stated.
Even though number of infections due to COVID-19 has been rising among staff in Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Research Center in Mysore, the hospital continues to provide care and treatment to hundreds of heart patients.
The 350 bed facility has among 550 staffers including housekeeping, Group D, catering and security workers. As per Dr. KS Sadananda senior consultant and medical superintended, Jayadeva some or the other of their health care workers test positive every day. ‘’We are going through hard times’’ he stated.
He stated that the biggest challenge for him as head of the institute is to encourage staff and doctors and all personnel. ‘’We work close to each other in closed environment and the chances of being infected are high. But this hasn’t deterred our employees. Wearing personal protective equipment for six –eight hours is exhausting. It’s been happening for months now but we have to bear it’’, he stated.
Dr. KS also added that the biggest challenge is to identify whether patients are suffering from covid-19 or heart related issues. ‘’People with breathlessness arrive at our facility every day. About 25% such patients are diagnosed with COVID. Ours is a government facility and we can’t turn patients away. On average 500 patients turn up at our outpatient department daily and about 7% of them will require admission’’, he stated.
He also emphasized upon the fact that patients with cardiovascular disease are a vulnerable population and they require immediate attention. He added that ‘’what is worrying is that patients are seeking medical help late fearing Covid. There is a further delay as some hospitals are seeking coronavirus reports before admitting patients’’.
