11,000 trees will be cut to widen Hassan-DK road

HASSAN: In a major blow to the environment, nearly 11,000 trees will be chopped off to widen road between Hassan and Dakshina Kannada. The first phase will cover Hassan-Maranhalli stretch (48km), while the second one covers Maranhalli-BC Road stretch (63km).As per the plan, the road will be widened to 45m. Majority of them were fully grown.Hassan DCF Manjunath said that for the road-widening work, 11,000 trees — both big and small — will have to be cut. Already, 50% of trees on either side of the road has been chopped. Once the present two-lane road is four-laned, travel time between Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Hassan is expected to reduce to 5 hours from the present 8 hours.Work on the Hassan to BC Road (Bantwal Cross Road) stretch, which is 111km, has been taken up in two phases.

The first phase will cover Hassan-Maranhalli stretch (48km), while the second one covers Maranhalli-BC Road stretch (63km).As per the plan, the road will be widened to 45m. The work, taken up at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore (Rs 850 crore for the first phase, and Rs 600 crore for the second), is expected to be completed in two years.According to officials, nearly 11,000 trees (grown along 48km stretch and in 297 hectares of land owned by government, revenue and private lands) have to be cleared. Already, 50% of trees grown near Ballupete and Sakaleshwara have been uprooted. Majority of them were fully grown.Hassan DCF Manjunath said that for the road-widening work, 11,000 trees — both big and small — will have to be cut. "Trees coming under forest areas will be chopped and moved to timber yard owned by the department," he said.As per the project, following facilities will be built: a toll plaza at Chowlakere near Byrapura in Aluru taluk, a bypass road at Palya, bridges, bus shelters, service roads, and underpasses. The hurdle to acquire land at Bellupete has been resolved, and the remaining process will be executed soon. About 90% of land owned by 2,500 villagers in 65 villagers has been acquired.National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) special land acquisition officer Manjunath said that the four-lane road between Hassan and Dakshina Kannada district will prove a boon to travellers. "The owners of private land, which were acquired for the road widening work, have been compensated well," he said, thanking all those who have supported the project.
