Nagpur: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised objections over Nagpur University’s move to provide laptops, inverters and photocopy machines to the colleges acting as examination centres. The CAG made it clear to NU that it was not supposed to extend such largesse from the general funds. The cash-strapped NU had spent a whopping Rs3 crore on providing laptops, printers and inverters to over 200 exam centres, after consistent demand from the affiliated colleges.Citing NU officials, TOI on January 24 had reported on how none of the traditional universities in Maharashtra offered such largesse to the exam centres. The revelation was made by vice chancellor SP Kane himself after the issue cropped during his meeting with the Principals Forum on Thursday. While discussing various contentious issues, the forum under senior academician Baban Taywade demanded generator sets from NU for smooth conduction of exam and also increase in remuneration behind every examinee at Rs12.While rejecting both their demands, the VC apprised the forum members about CAG’s objections to any such facility being extended to the affiliated colleges acting as exam centres. “I told them that we’re already providing inverters to them along with laptops and photocopier and it wouldn’t be advisable for us to provide generator sets,” he told TOI.He clarified that it was mandatory for all affiliated colleges to extend all help to NU for smoothly conducting the exams without charging a penny, as per the ‘Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016’ still NU provide them hefty remuneration. The VC defended NU’s decision to provide laptops to centre, with the CAG officials stating that it was done to ensure safe and smooth conduction of examinations, particularly in the rural areas, where load shedding was prevalent.“We told them (CAG) that laptops provided by us have a special software which would be opened by only one authorized person with a password. Moreover, it also helps us to keep a watch on what time, the question paper was downloaded and dispatched for printing. Through this system, we’re able to plug the leakages of question papers,” he said. While rejecting another demand of forum members for revising the expenditure behind every student appearing in examinations from their institution, Kane said, NU already provides them Rs25-30 through various counts and it was ready to accept their demand. “We already provide them much more amount than they were demanding. After realizing their mistake, they withdrew their demand,” he said.TOI had reported on how NU officials questioned on top colleges like Shivaji Science, Dr Ambedkar, Hislop, GS, LAD, Dharampeth and others need such facilities, when they were already having that.
