NAGPUR: Today people can get information about any aliment at the click of a mouse, thanks to the various medical websites. Technology has definitely changed the dynamics of medical profession, but the sentimental value of doctors is still there. Doctors are hailed as god and medical profession is considered as the noblest profession, making it the most preferred field for students.Apart from the well-known streams like gynaecology and dentistry, students can also consider subjects like radiology, cardiology and oncology that find only a handful of takers despite the growing demand. “Specialization becomes necessary as it increases job prospects and also enhances skills; and superspecialty is like cherry on the cake,” says former dean of government dental college, Dr Vinay Hazare. “There are non-clinical fields as well in which one can specialize in. This opens doors for lectureship,” he adds.According to Dr Vikas Bisne, a leading cardiologist from city, a doctor must work hard relentlessly since it helps in winning trust. “Trust is the most important factor in this profession, and after the initial few years of struggle, a bond develops with the patients and that is the biggest achievement of a doctor,” he says and adds, “Students should not give up due to struggle, since hard work and persistence pays off sooner or later.”Radiologist Dr Dinesh Singh believes that there are not enough expert radiologists. “Radiology is about preliminary diagnosis. It is one of the most lucrative career options available with a plethora of opportunities for budding paramedics,” he says.Research is another interesting area of medical science, and cancer tops the list. “Cancer continues to be one of the biggest threats and shows how intense research is required in oncology,” says oncologist at Care Hospital, Dr Amit Jaiswal. “Since the Indian medical field is still emerging, more than practicing oncology research has a tremendous untapped potential. But students might have to shift base outside city for better opportunities,” he adds.Today, freshers too can join a multispecialty hospital. “Since young MBBS graduates today are equipped with both technology and medical knowledge, this is an excellent opportunity for them,” says director of KRIMS Hospital, Ketki Arbat and adds, “This is also a good option for freshers looking for a fixed pay.”Few career paths require such relentless tests of commitment and dedication as the medical field. A doctor not only shows an aptitude for health and sciences but more importantly, displays an enduring passion for the profession itself.Being a doctor demands hard work, awareness, a will to upgrade and a sense of social responsibility since you get to witness the best and the worst of humanity. Physical demands are high too as medical professionals spend long hours working and need to be available round the clock. They constantly need to update their knowledge and have something to learn from every experience, even after decades of practice.A career in medicine has always been highly sought-after. Even with the changing scenario and deviation from science streams, the demand for doctors is as high as ever. The ratio of doctor to patient is low and many people in the country still do not have access to quality and affordable health care.Earlier, the training in medical schools was more clinical based with emphasis on practical experience, but today efficient use of technology is also stressed upon.A plethora of choices are available after one completes MBBS. A general practitioner with only a MBBS degree is quite valued, but post graduation in radiology, orthopaedics, gynaecology, internal medicine and surgery are trending these days.After MBBS, one can also get into clinical research, public health department or hospital management. As long as a doctor works honestly and with dedication, finances will never be a problem. Private hospitals pay handsomely and government hospitals too have been trying to mobilize funds and provide salaries at par.
