They claimed that though MSc courses have been oversubscribed, the number of applications were less as compared to last year. “When we started filling the option form, only MSc Geology two-year course was showing up in the drop down menu. Nagpur: Though the link for Nagpur University’s (NU) first online centralized admission process (CAP) for postgraduate courses in Humanities and Science closed on July 10, colleges continue to receive queries and complaints from parents and students.Several colleges, parents and students say that the CAP schedule was not properly advertised, leading to many of them missing the application deadline earlier this week. They also said that the applications couldn’t be completed as there was no option in the menu for students coming from polytechnic and engineering background or out of state. On Wednesday, a parent visited the NU college section complaining that his son couldn’t apply for the MSc course of his choice. “When we started filling the option form, only MSc Geology two-year course was showing up in the drop down menu. My son wanted Applied Geology,” the parent said. The officials told him to retry in the CAP II round starting from Thursday. Some principals said not just students but also colleges were not aware of the important cut off dates. They claimed that though MSc courses have been oversubscribed, the number of applications were less as compared to last year. MA courses got only 30% application against an intake of 12,950.Vice-chancellor SP Kane said the link can’t be opened again but there is provision for direct admission without registering for CAP.The administration had launched the online CAP with much-fanfare and claims that it will prove to be a game-changer for colleges and university departments who have to scramble for getting decent number of admissions. However, the MSc courses received 3,764 applications against an intake of 1,966 seats available at NU postgraduate departments and affiliated colleges. As per some colleges, the number of applicants could have been much higher. Also, 3,704 applications were registered against intake of 12,950 in MA courses.NU top brass has dismissed the poor show saying, “It is common scenario for humanities and students know they would easily get admissions. The vacant seats for MA will be filled through spot admissions.”Some principals said the system too need to be developed further as there was no answer for specific problems faced by applicants.A principal said, “While filling the forms online, some out-of-state students couldn’t proceed further as there was no option for keying in grades. The software has been developed with only the grading pattern of Maharashtra.”This only shows the limited view of NU and the agency hired by it for the work, a teacher said. The principal said such problems may have forced students to drop the plan.NU officials admitted that there were certain issues in form filling but claimed that the software was immediately updated to incorporate suggestions. They said applicants also with background like post SSC polytechnic and BE now wanted to pursue MA. “Initially, they couldn’t proceed further and complete the application. When the problem was reported, the software was immediately updated,” they said.
