In public interest, it should remove the speed breakers immediately,” said Vidarbha Taxpayers’ Association Tejinder Singh Renu. Nagpur: The National Environmental Engineering Research Insitute (Neeri) has urged the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to withdraw its notice and allow the two speed breakers installed by it to remain in the interest of public safety. As there was no response from the civic body, Neeri installed the speed breaker on its own, which it admitted to in its letter.Neeri stated that such speed breakers were in place on the airport road and some residential areas. “It can be understood that all those speed breakers are not put by the NMC and instead by the local residents for their own safety,” Neeri stated in its letter. The organization also stated that the speed breakers installed by it had Cat Eye and solar studs which blink 24 hours and serve as a warning for motorists.“Neeri’s action sets a wrong example for others. The civic body had on Tuesday asked the organization to remove them in 24 hours. The fibre-based breakers had been fixed into a recently constructed concretized road by Neeri without taking any permission from the NMC near its campus rear gate.In a letter to NMC on Wednesday, Neeri’s administrative officer S Majumdar said that since the construction of cement road, “motorists drive at a very high speed on this particular stretch (Neeri Road)” and the speed breakers will “prevent accidents”.A senior NMC official told TOI that the matter will be discussed with municipal commissioner Virendra Singh for “further course of action”.Claiming that due to partially built medians and lack of blinkers many accidents took place on the stretch, Neeri submitted an application to NMC on May 10 and July 4 to install speed breakers.
