NAGPUR: Sunil Kedar , Congress MLA from Saoner, launched an all-out attack on BJP-ruled Nagpur Municipal Corporation NMC ) charging it with failing to address most of the problems of the city. It was after several years that Nagpur’s problems featured in a prolonged discussion in state assembly. Kedar was speaking during the last week resolution moved by the opposition.Kedar began with the 24x7 water supply project. “Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had told the house in December 2017 that NMC was providing round the clock water to 70,000 consumers in the city. However, a few weeks ago when opposition in NMC asked the municipal commissioner about number of beneficiaries of 24x7 project, he said that he did not have the figure and would be able to give it only in December 2018. So who is telling the truth,” he said.Turning to sanitation, the MLA said that NMC had failed to develop a sewage system and the entire sewage was being discharged in Nag river, which had become highly polluted. “The polluted water of Nag river flows into Gosikhurd reservoir, which has also become polluted. Fishes are dying in it,” he added.“The BJP government makes a song and dance about Nagpur Metro but the city’s bus service is in shambles. Commuters are suffering and only person seems to benefit is the consultant Dinesh Rathi. NMC has paid him Rs32 crore. Shouldn’t the consultant pay the price for failure of the service,” said Kedar.According to the MLA, NMC was not interested in running schools for poor children. “It is closing down the schools and handing over the premises to other institutions at negligible rent. The health centres and hospitals of NMC are in pitiable shape and many have closed down,” he further said.“NMC had promised to built 50,000 affordable houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) but it has not even built 1,000,” he said.Kedar blamed the civic body for High Court’s directive to raze illegal religious structures. “NMC does not take any action against encroachers on roads and encroachments by big businessmen but it razes temples built by common people,” he said. The MLA said that NMC presented an inflated budget every year which had strained its finances. “The dues owed by NMC to small contractors is Rs150 crore. They are unable to make their two ends meet,” he added.
