No case of enteric fever (typhoid) registered too.As reported by TOI on July 14, one Rajendra Thakre (51), a resident of Gandhi Gate, Mahal — had died reportedly due to viral hepatitis-E (severe stage of jaundice) on July 12. As per NMC records, the death was the first in the last decade. The cases of waterborne diseases are higher than that recorded with the NMC. Medical officer (epidemic) Dr Sunil Ghurde told TOI a warning has been issued to all hospitals to send details of patients admitted for waterborne diseases. “Only 50 hospitals are sending us reports. It is mandatory for the hospitals to send reports of all notifiable diseases. It helps us to initiate preventive measures in the residential areas from where the patients are coming from,” he said.Ghurde added NMC continued to distribute chlorine tablets and drops in residential localities for prevention of waterborne diseases.Corporator from Mahal Bunty Shelke alleged that the NMC water works department and private operator Orange City Water Private Limited are not looking into contaminated supply of drinking water despite rise in waterborne diseases. “There is also a rise in areas getting contaminated drinking water. Even my house is not exempted. Many children and senior citizens are either hospitalized or taking OPD treatment. Police department is also not taking any action despite a complaint being lodged after the death of Thakre,” he said.
