Nagpur: Though patients and students continue to suffer in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) due to paltry resources and inadequate facilities, the inspection report from the Medical Council of India (MCI) seems contrary and sees “all is well” in the institute. The MCI inspectors, it seems, conveniently managed to ignore issues like apathy of administration towards patients, lack of medicines in pharmacy, more than 4 students sharing a room in hostel, shortage of water for both patients and resident doctors and other dubious issues the media often serve on a hot pan. However, finding no major deficiencies, inspectors from MCI reported that they are pleased with staff requirement, equipment and infrastructure in the GMCH. Over the weeks, when Nagpur Today did a reality check in GMCH, shocking facts had come to the fore. From patient’s kin buying medicines from private medical stores to college students forced to stand in queue for water due to insufficient water supply inside college premises the GMCH was found bogged down with many shortcomings. The prolonged saga of ‘machinery is out of service’ is continuing without any interruption. The despair of patients along with their kin seems to have no end. Nagpur Today had also reported the failure of angiography machine in Super Specialty Hospital which caused severe problems for patients, result of which few even missed their operation. Amid all such problems, the MCI report appears nothing but a cover up. On Monday morning, the MCI team comprising Dr D D Dattaroy, Dr Kavita Rajratan, Dr Jugalkishor Kar and Dr A K Pande visited the GMCH to ascertain the facilities, infrastructure and availability o fteaching and non-teaching staffers to justify the intake capacity of 200 under-graduate seats. After a discussion at the Dean’s office, they separately inspected OPD, IPD, different wards, operation theatres, trauma care centre, playing ground, kitchen, hostel and other departments.
