Nagpur: After only a couple of meetings of newly-formed senate and management council ( MC ), both of which include elected members , the Nagpur University ( NU ) has felt the need to educate several first timers about functioning of statutory bodies.Vice-chancellor SP Kane said they had observed some members assumed he was “leader of the ruling class” and they were the opposition while discussing the academic matters. “Hence, a six-member committee would hold sessions on Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016, bodies, statutes, ordinances and the protocol on September 19,” Kane added.Of the 75 senators, 60 are likely to attend the session as rest are ex-officio members. I am not an elected representative but a salaried officer of the university. The workshop will create awareness about powers and duties of university officers. The Act is new for all and it takes time to understand it. Until someone tells them, they won’t realize how the university functions,” Kane said.Kane claimed the members would be getting such lessons for the first time. Pro-VC Pramod Yeole said six-member committee comprises five academicians beside himself and would deal with different topics. Yeole would be highlighting the provisions of the Act for the members.University’s Law College principal Shrikant Kommawar, NU’s management professor Vinayak Deshpande, MC member Bhoyar, former NUTA secretary Anil Dhage and CD Deshmukh from Amravati University are the resource persons for the session.Yeole said, “Kommawar will deliver talk on statutes and ordinances, Deshpande will speak about committees and councils, Bhoyar on different authorities, Dhage about senate members, calling attention motion while Deshmukh will summarize the session.”
