Nagpur: Ajni police have landed in controversy by allowing 21-year-old Nancy Sokhi, recently granted bail in a charge of burglary, to distribute sweets in the police station on September 17. The woman, now on bail, is allegedly involved in the burglary at the residence-cum-hospital of Dr Pushpa Ambhore at Narendra Nagar on May 27, where cash Rs20 lakh was stolen.Nancy, whose mother owns a boutique in North Nagpur, was picked up by crime branch’s team of Assistant PI Kiran Choughule following a tip-off in July. Another accused, Munnawar Shaikh alias Nazim, too was nabbed. Another four persons, including one Rafique, are yet to be arrested. Police claimed to have recovered Rs2.5 lakh of the loot. After nabbing Najim and Nancy, the crime branch had handed over the duo to Ajni police station, where the offence was initially registered.A person who witnessed the sweets distribution at Ajni police station had gone there to lodge a complaint. “We were initially baffled after being offered sweets at the police station. The woman identified herself as Nancy,” the eyewitness told TOI. “The cops were all enjoying the sweets offered to them by the woman. One of the cops later told us that the woman was accused of burglary but had been distributing the sweets for some occasion,” said the eyewitness. It’s learnt that Najim, booked in several other cases in the past, was not confessing. Nancy had helped police by spilling the beans during custodial interrogation, and revealing how the burglary was planned and executed. Nancy had participated in the burglary as she wanted fast cash. She had used a stolen phone to pose as a patient and called up Dr Ambhore to find out her location before her accomplices broke into the doctor’s residence. Nancy had also visited the clinic earlier. So, Dr Ambhore had identified Nancy when she was produced before her.Investigating officer YV Ingle of Ajni police station said Nancy had distributed sweets to celebrate her victory in a bike race at Ramtek. “Nancy had won a race on Bullet bike and was sharing her happiness with the cops. The other reason for bringing sweets was it was prasad for Ganapati festival,” he said.Police sources said Nancy and Najim visit the police station every Monday to sign the register as part of their bail condition. TOI had shared the incident with Zonal DCP Nilesh Bharne, who admitted the distribution of sweets in police station was wrong in principle.
