CBSE students to play the markets with Rs7 cr ‘virtual’ cash

Nagpur: CBSE students can now get a feel of what it means to handle an international investment portfolio worth over Rs7 crore, at today’s exchange rates. The teams will be using Wharton’s online Trading and Investment Simulator (OTIS), which will provide a real world feel in trading markets. Prizes amounting to $5,000, $2,000 and $1,000 were given to first, second and third standing global winners last year.The ‘Knowledge@Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition’ is a free, global, online investment simulation for high school students (9th to 12th grade) and teachers. They will manage the $100,000 virtual portfolio over 10 weeks, and whoever ends up with the highest valuation wins the competition.

Nagpur: CBSE students can now get a feel of what it means to handle an international investment portfolio worth over Rs7 crore, at today’s exchange rates. The central board has requested every school to participate in a trading competition being organized by Wharton High School (USA), University of Pennsylvania, and the NSE Academy, which will see students handling US$100,000 in virtual cash.Every school can enter one team of four to seven students. They will manage the $100,000 virtual portfolio over 10 weeks, and whoever ends up with the highest valuation wins the competition. The teams will be using Wharton’s online Trading and Investment Simulator (OTIS), which will provide a real world feel in trading markets. After completion of 10 weeks, each team is required to submit final report and presentation for regional competition.The regional finale for 10 countries, including India, will be held at NSE Headquarters, Mumbai, in February 2019, which will be followed by grand finale in May 2019 in the USA. Prizes amounting to $5,000, $2,000 and $1,000 were given to first, second and third standing global winners last year.The ‘Knowledge@Wharton High School (KWHS) Investment Competition’ is a free, global, online investment simulation for high school students (9th to 12th grade) and teachers. Students learn about teamwork, communication, risk, diversification, company analysis, industry analysis and investing. KWHS’ web portal says it “has a mission to create free resources that help high school students and educators gain a deeper understanding of business and finance”.Student competitors are required to submit a brief mid-project team review, and a more comprehensive final written investment strategy and competition experience overview. KWHS judges review the final documents and select a group of 10-12 top teams. Top teams are invited to present their strategies during a regional finale to a panel of expert judges, who then select the top analyst teams. The winners of each regional round are then invited to compete in a global finale at Wharton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US.Since CBSE is already running a joint certificate programme in collaboration with National Stock Exchange (NSE) called ‘Financial Market Management’ for Std IX-XII, the board hopes this competition will motivate students further.
