Nagpur: The city-based Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) is striving to achieve an unprecedented benchmark of ‘zero pendency’ except in their DNA wing where manpower constraint and insufficient supply of chemicals generally plagues smooth functioning.The prosecution earlier would remain affected with routine delay by the RFSL in reporting cases.The authorities now have adopted a fresh work culture of prompt reporting of cases under RFSL deputy director Vijay Thakare, who has taken up the reins of the city RFSL which has six units under it — Nagpur, Nagpur rural, Bhandara, Wardha, Gondia and Gadchiroli.The section under Prohibition Act with cases related to illegal liquor seizure, the pendency has drastically reduced. Around 2,510 cases of illegal liquor were reported, including 758 at the sub-unit of Chandrapur this year. 1, 668 cases have been reported from the prohibition wing till now.In another achievement, 20 cases of ballistics have been reported so far this year, thus leaving no pendency in the wing.In general analytical division, which conducts tests on contraband substances, combustible fuels among others, the current pendency is merely 55 which includes 33 of the last month. Similarly, in Biology department too which conducts analysis on viscera and other tests, now has only 350 pending cases. Sources from RFSL claimed in the toxicology department too, the pendency is now 317 which included 286 recently received cases.Deputy director Thakare said the RFSL has engaged a number of scientist assistants on contract basis who are being allotted time-bound tasks.“The manpower has been filled up by the government but we have managed to bring speed in our reporting with the help of contractual experts whose continuance in the unit is purely based on their performance,” he said.
