Couple’s bodies fished out from Futala Lake

Nagpur: Bodies of a couple tied to each other were fished out from Futala Lake on Wednesday after a passerby spotted them floating near the surface. Ambazari police, along with a fire tender, rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies from the lake. The duo had gone missing two days ago.On Wednesday at around 10am, a person spotted the body of the duo and informed the cops. The post mortem will be carried out on Thursday at Government Medical College and Hospital.Several suicides have been reported at Futala Lake in the past. Cops found that the duo had tied their hands with a long scarf before jumping into the lake.Initially, the cops did not find any documents to identify the bodies.

The deceased have been identified as Chetan Mhetre (23) and Bharti Kelwadkar (17).Police said that Chetan, a resident of Binaki Mangalwari, and Bharti of Shanti Nagar were in love. However, their relatives did not approve of their relationship due to which they decided to take the drastic step. The duo had gone missing two days ago.On Wednesday at around 10am, a person spotted the body of the duo and informed the cops. Ambazari police, along with a fire tender, rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies from the lake. Cops found that the duo had tied their hands with a long scarf before jumping into the lake.Initially, the cops did not find any documents to identify the bodies. Just a mobile phone without a SIM card was recovered from the spot.Accordingly, police started tracing the IMEI number of the mobile and finally found the owner.It is learnt that no missing report was filed by the family members of the deceased. However, Bharti’s father reportedly approached Yashodhara Nagar police on Wednesday afternoon.Ambazari police have currently registered a case of accidental death. The post mortem will be carried out on Thursday at Government Medical College and Hospital.Several suicides have been reported at Futala Lake in the past. Police sources said that several letters have been sent to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to build a railing or a wall near the lake so that no person can jump in it. However, sources claimed that NMC has not yet taken any steps to prevent such incidents.
