Thereafter, the collectorate came out with a plan to build an amphitheatre that needed more land than 7.5 acres allotted by the NU. “The new main building’s parking would be extended till the open land where the amphitheatre has been planned. However, it was not clear how the design would be implemented or if the auditorium would be a separate structure from the amphitheatre. The additional chunk of land is in extension of the already allotted seven acres. He also hinted at change in the design of the structure saying the facility would have a 1,500-capacity closed door auditorium.

Nagpur: The Management Council of Nagpur University on Thursday unanimously okayed a proposal to allot additional 7.5 acre of its campus land off Ambazari Road for construction of an amphitheatre adjacent to its upcoming main administrative building.Vice-chancellor SP Kane said details along with map were provided to members and the proposal was passed without any opposition. The additional chunk of land is in extension of the already allotted seven acres. “The new main building’s parking would be extended till the open land where the amphitheatre has been planned. A road from behind the statistics department to the new main building bisects the entire parcel of allotted land,” he said.Kane said the total area now stands at 14 acre that would be developed by the state government. He also hinted at change in the design of the structure saying the facility would have a 1,500-capacity closed door auditorium. “The amphitheatre steps would be over the auditorium roof,” the VC said. However, it was not clear how the design would be implemented or if the auditorium would be a separate structure from the amphitheatre. Further discussion on the issue would be held on Friday as the meeting was adjourned today. On December 25, TOI had reported Maharashtra government’s decision to build the 10,000-capacity amphitheatre on the campus land. It would be named after former chief minister Vasantrao Naik and will be constructed at an expenditure of Rs20 crore already sanctioned. The amphitheatre would be made commercially viable on the lines of Suresh Bhat auditorium and would be one of the most sought after spots.Kane said possession of the land would be with the university while the new facility’s maintenance would be the government’s responsibility. “The university will benefit in three ways. Water supply problem of the campus will be solved. A couple of remaining encroachments would be removed by the government machinery and university will get a ready-made facility for all its events free of cost,” Kane said.Architecture firm Salankar Associates has designed the amphitheatre. Authorities were waiting for NU nod, after which they would start the work on it. After HC’s ban on organizing programmes in Kasturchand Park, there was need to have a place where big programmes could be held.Earlier, the government had planned a 1,500-capacity auditorium on the land, but after TOI published a report on June 15 about NU’s opposition to it, the plan was dropped.NU had said a small hall wouldn’t suffice for its convocation usually attended by over 2,000 persons. Thereafter, the collectorate came out with a plan to build an amphitheatre that needed more land than 7.5 acres allotted by the NU.
