NU decides to preserve one copy of each PhD thesis

Nagpur: The Nagpur University (NU) management council on Thursday decided to preserve a copy each of the hundreds of doctorate of philosophy (PhD) thesis submitted by scholars over the years. Over the years, the pile has eaten up most of the space, and soon there won’t be any space left. Moreover, several voluminous books are dumped along the corridors, from where they could be easily stolen, Rotele said. At least four copies remain at the library. The meeting will continue on Friday, Kane said.ON THE AGENDA* As per uniform statute, names of all students being awarded degrees need to be placed before the academic council followed by the management council.

Nagpur: The Nagpur University (NU) management council on Thursday decided to preserve a copy each of the hundreds of doctorate of philosophy (PhD) thesis submitted by scholars over the years. These would be stored at its main administrative building at Rabindranath Tagore Marg, Civil Lines, after the administration shifts to the new building on Ambazari Road.The decision was taken after member Chandan Singh Rotele moved a resolution highlighting the lack of space at NU’s library amid heaps of theses.Rotele said scholars have to submit seven hard copies of their research work along with a soft copy. At least four copies remain at the library. Over the years, the pile has eaten up most of the space, and soon there won’t be any space left. Moreover, several voluminous books are dumped along the corridors, from where they could be easily stolen, Rotele said. He demanded that a copy each should be forwarded to the place of research from where the study was carried out for their reference.Rotele was supported by members Nitin Kongre, Urmila Dabir and Vishnu Changde.Accepting the resolution, the council also decided to keep a copy for its records at the main administrative building after the shift to the new building.Vice chancellor SP Kane said scholars are expected to take away additional copies after evaluation of their theses but they never come back.In another decision, Kane said the council passed a resolution to destroy all election material such as ballots, rolls etc of statutory bodies elections held from 2005 to 2010. Records of the last election held in 2016-17 would be preserved in case any claim or complaint arises, till the present members complete their terms.The meeting had to be adjourned even though all resolutions on the agenda couldn’t be taken up.
