Nagpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pandharkawda, a major cotton growing centre of the region, is expected to have an impact on neighbouring state of Telangana. The town in Yavatmal district is about 30 kms from Telangana border, where BJP was reduced to a single seat in 2018 assembly elections.Party workers managing the event are relying on towns close to the border to get crowds for Modi’s mega pre-poll rally. Against one lakh people expected to turn up for the event around 50,000 are expected from districts with within 100 kms of Pandharkawda in Telangana, said sources. Modi would be addressing members of women’s self help group (SHG) during the rally. The town also happens to be the home of Kishore Tiwari, the activist who brought farmers’ suicides to national limelight. In the BJP regime, he was made chairman of Vasantrao Naik Shetkari Swavalamban Mission, a state government task force on agrarian crisis.Tiwari has been given the mandate to select the venue and also oversee arrangements. The event is being held close to his house. Tiwari had also managed the visit of Rahul Gandhi to the area during UPA’s first term. He was also involved in making arrangements for then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the region.Tiwari told TOI that around 50,000 persons, mainly women, are expected to come from Telangana. Lists of the coordinators in Telangana have been drawn up, he said. Tiwari also called the event to be the beginning of damage control exercise by BJP in the area. The party has performed worse in the belt and now it is making attempts to improve its image.“Party’s Telangana unit is also hoping to get some mileage from the Pandharkawda rally. Area close to Maharashtra has seven assembly seats. Even as BJP has been reduced to a single seat in the state, the candidates managed to get over 45,000 votes in two assembly constituencies, which indicates BJP still has a chance in the belt,” said Adinath Vaklavaranam, a district convener of the party. Now with an eye on the forthcoming parliamentary elections it has been planned to mobilize the locals hoping Modi’s visit may brighten the party’s prospects in Telangana too, he added. There are some pending works there, like an overbridge in Adilabad or a dam in Sirpur. The party workers from Telangana are planning to bring this to the notice of the prime minister, he said. The workers are mobilizing crowds from places like Nirmal, Sirpur Kagaznagar and Mancherial, apart from Adilabad, said a source.Meanwhile, despite the political alienation with BJP many villagers in Telangana TOI spoke to are keen to just have a glimpse of Modi.
