Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is all set to resume sterilization of stray dogs from Wednesday. The animal birth control (ABC) programme has been assigned to Satara NGO Vet For Animal. The sterilization will start at the Veterinary Hospital on Maharajbagh Road. Though the hospital has a capacity to treat 40 dogs per day, the agency will initially conduct ABC on 20-25 dogs.Sources pointed out that the NMC will pay the agency Rs700 for per ABC procedure. It will also keep stray dogs for three days. The NMC will first target stray dogs from public places like railway station, bus stops and airport and then from residential localities.The NMC’s ABC programme has been mired in controversy since its implementation. It was first started in August 2006 by appointing four agencies which continued till 2010. The programme was restarted in early 2011 and late 2017 and on both occasions the programme was suspended over controversies.NMC estimates that there are around 90,000 stray dogs in the city. The canine population is on rise due to NMC’s failure to run the programme in proper manner and on a regular basis.
