Simple tests, affordable medicines can deal with thyroid diseases

Nagpur: Thyroid diseases are, arguably, among the commonest endocrine disorders worldwide. Unfortunately, many patients suffering from it don’t even realize that they have a thyroid disorder. However, simple test of thyroid stimulating hormones (STH) and very affordable medicines can bring effective cure of hyperthyroidism, said experts.Endocrinologists from different parts of the country were in Nagpur on Sunday to discuss various aspects of thyroid diseases in ‘Thyroid Update — 2019’ conference.“Symptoms like gaining too much weight, constantly, without any specific reason or low scores in examinations despite putting in a lot of effort can be of thyroid disorders. In India, thyroid is also affecting younger patients in the age bracket of 15-20 years,” said Dr Sanjay Naidu.“By doing a simple, inexpensive test of thyroid, we can diagnose all thyroid diseases at once. According to Dr Naidu, a STH test costs less than Rs250 in standard labs while a three-month course of thyroid tablets costs less than Rs150.Dr Abhyudaya Varma from Indore said thyroid diseases are more common in women. “All pregnant women should be mandatorily screened for thyroid disorders. If possible, all newborns should be screened for thyroid hypofunction,” he said. Dr Vinayak Harale from Pune and Dr Sachin Chittawar from Bhopal spoke about thyroid disorders in pregnancy and management of hyperthyroidism, respectively. They discussed that thyroid cancers are rare, and very slow growing tumours. They can be cured completely, if treated properly.During this daylong event, doctors from Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) and Lata Mangeshkar College (LMC) presented interesting cases of thyroid disorders. Dr Suraj Naidu from Sharad Pawar Dental College presented a paper on ‘Dental management in thyroid patients’. The Nagpur Diabetes Endocrine Centre had organized this conference in association with Association of Physician of India (API) and Association of Medical Faculties (AMF).
