The project at Gandhisagar Lake was the brainchild of the then Standing Committee Chairman Sudhir Raut who is caterer by profession. But still the Khau Galli has not seen the light of the day. The infrastructure created for the Khau Galli at the cost of over Rs 50 lakh is crumbling and the place wears a deserted and eerie look. The previous Standing Committee had spent around Rs 50 lakh over creating this infrastructure, and beautification work was done there. People of Nagpur, who have always had this reputation of being the hardcore foodies, have been waiting and waiting since the past two and a half years to enjoy mouth-watering delicacies at the Khau Galli.

Nagpur: With the aim of serving diehard foodies in Nagpur City, former Chairman of NMC’s Standing Committee Sudhir (Bandu) Raut had floated a scheme to set up Khau Galli — a food and recreational street — along historic Gandhi Sagar bank in front of Raman Science Centre on the lines of Indore’s renowned Khau Galli. However, the plan remained on paper only or in the ‘empty mind’ of the then Chairman. The infrastructure created for the Khau Galli at the cost of over Rs 50 lakh is crumbling and the place wears a deserted and eerie look. People of Nagpur, who have always had this reputation of being the hardcore foodies, have been waiting and waiting since the past two and a half years to enjoy mouth-watering delicacies at the Khau Galli. Exorbitant rent is shooing away the interested vendors. The dome-shaped stalls built at the lake side are ‘now hosting’ only stray dogs, homeless people for spending days and nights. The project at Gandhisagar Lake was the brainchild of the then Standing Committee Chairman Sudhir Raut who is caterer by profession. Raut spent lakhs for erecting 30 sheds or stalls along the lake side. But still the Khau Galli has not seen the light of the day. The civic body had installed 32 canopies. However, the stalls stand damaged or are in a bad shape. The NMC administration, however, have failed to frame a policy to hand over these stalls and collect monthly rent. The previous Standing Committee had spent around Rs 50 lakh over creating this infrastructure, and beautification work was done there. But in two years since, street lights stand broken, paint is fading out, and tiles are uprooted. The infrastructure developed by spending huge money is simply left to go waste.
