Restaurant director held for duping partners of Rs1.35cr

Nagpur: Director of Port O’Gomez restaurant on North Ambazari Road has been arrested by Dhantoli police on Tuesday for allegedly duping his three business partners of Rs1.35 crore between January 2015 and December 2018. Gomez regularly used to tell Bagchi about restaurant business being very profitable. Bagchi and Heda deposited Rs73.52 lakh in the account.

Nagpur: Director of Port O’Gomez restaurant on North Ambazari Road has been arrested by Dhantoli police on Tuesday for allegedly duping his three business partners of Rs1.35 crore between January 2015 and December 2018. Alvin Gomez, 49, has also been accused of stealing vouchers and account books of the restaurant in a complaint filed by his partner Shomit Bagchi, a charted accountant.Gomez was also arrested in 2017 over rape charges by MIDC police.According to police, Gomez, a resident of Sonegaon, used to work at a posh hotel in Ramdaspeth. Bagchi was the CA for that hotel, hence they knew each other. Gomez regularly used to tell Bagchi about restaurant business being very profitable. In the same period, Gomez also got in touch with Sumit Heda and Pankaj Rathi. Gomez gave them the idea of starting a new restaurant.The four then started a company Gomez Food Art Pvt Ltd. with each one having 25% equity in the company. Gomez then claimed he had no money and will pitch in his shares after sometime. Other three believed him and also opened an account in a private sector bank. Bagchi and Heda deposited Rs73.52 lakh in the account. A loan of Rs1.60 crore was taken to buy the premises and Rs55 lakh for furnishing and infrastructure from the same bank.In all Bagchi invested Rs65 lakh, Heda Rs45 lakh and Rathi put in Rs1.77 crore. After a few months, the three took a loan of Rs 2.69 crore from a finance company and paid the loan of the bank. The instalments for the newly procured loan were paid by Bagchi, Heda and Rathi.In 2016, Gomez started the Port O’Gomez restaurant on North Ambazari Road. He had experience in the business so other partners decided to let him run it. However, complainants alleged that instead of depositing all the earnings of the hotel in the account of Gomez Food Art Pvt Ltd as agreed, Gomez diverted some to another account by the name of Gomez Biz.He allegedly deposited Rs1.35 crore in this account. When Bagchi, Heda and Rathi came to know of this, they approached Dhantoli police station and registered a case of fraud. After initial investigation, police arrested Gomez.
