Nagpur: After February 8 attack on Nagpur University’s administrative block, the expensive security provided by the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) is under scanner. MSSC guards failed to stop all these incidents, despite the fact they have powers to even arrest, just like the police.Even Kane expressed his “total dissatisfaction” on MSSC’s repeated failure in preventing such incidents. All guards were trained to tackle adverse situations and that includes women personnel to handle girls and women, as per the NU officials. Nagpur: After February 8 attack on Nagpur University’s administrative block, the expensive security provided by the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) is under scanner. The university spends a whopping Rs2 crore annually on security, a major part of which is given to MSSC, a Maharashtra Government company.Last time, Akhil Bhartiya Vidayarthi Parishad (ABVP) hooligans barged into vice-chancellor SP Kane’s chamber with a bicycle and also raised slogans against him. After that, NSUI activists entered into Board of Examination and Evaluation (BOEE) director Neeraj Khaty’s chamber. Recently, some boys and girls from NSUI stayed in front of VC’s chamber the entire night. MSSC guards failed to stop all these incidents, despite the fact they have powers to even arrest, just like the police.Even Kane expressed his “total dissatisfaction” on MSSC’s repeated failure in preventing such incidents. “I am very disappointed by the poor security offered by them and would soon take a decision in this regard. There’s a need to review their working,” he told reporters. The VC questioned the ability of MSSC guards in failing to block a group of just 10-15 ABVP activists who managed to damage three iron gates and windows. “What will they do if a bigger mob of 50-100 persons storms into the university,” he asked.NU is always a soft target for various students groups, who belong to major political parties. Almost all the major groups like ABVP, NSUI, NCP and BJYM among others, have attacked NU’s different premises at one time or another, causing extensive damage to property. After facing flak from all quarters for poor security, Kane-led administration had decided to rope in services of MSSC.Replying to an RTI query from activist Abhay Kolarkar, NU officials said, MSSC had deployed 26 guards at NU administrative block and 27 at Examination and Evaluation centre, but hardly 10-12 are seen at both the places at any time.Even during February 8 attacks, MSSC guards not only failed to catch even a single assailant but also lodged an FIR two days after the attacks.MSSC team has experienced personnel as well as new recruits. Many are retired cops while new ones are also given training. All guards were trained to tackle adverse situations and that includes women personnel to handle girls and women, as per the NU officials.
