‘Nagpur has potential to come up as IT hub’

Nagpur: “Disruption in business models are going to take away jobs but also create fresh employment opportunities. In fast changing times, changes in business models driven by technology are creating an upheaval. One needs to be ready to adapt and cannot expect to be guaranteed a secure employment if not ready to upgrade,” said S Ramadorai, the former chairman of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).Ramadorai who currently heads the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was in the city to attend the 125th anniversary celebrations of Saraswati Vidyalaya. He had studied at the school, till Std II after which the family had shifted to Delhi.Talking about the scenario in the IT sector, he said there is an immense potential for cities like Nagpur to come up as IT hubs. This will also provide a major employment opportunity to the local manpower. In TCS’ Nagpur unit, 60% of employees are locals or from nearby centres.Given the quality of lifestyle and easy availability of manpower in cities like Nagpur, Indore, Coimbatore, Madurai or any such place of similar scale are becoming the destinations of choice for the IT industry.IT industry has a major scope of growth in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics. IT is also fast integrating with many sectors like health care and nutrition.About TISS, Ramadorai said the institute is laying special focus on areas like health care, nutrition rural growth, and environmental friendly development.In the North-east, projects are being taken up for the hearing-impaired. It is easy to detect deafness in childhood which is ignored. However, early detection can help. For some reasons, a number of cases of deafness, blindness and cleft lip are seen in the area.Ramadorai had also worked as the adviser to the prime minister in national skill development programme during UPA regime.
