Clean Nag river is also responsibility of Nagpurians The garbage dumped by citizens blocking the flow of Nag river under Mor Bhavan culvert at Sitabuldi. NMC recently cleaned garbage from the spot but people again dumped garbage in it. (Pic by Satish Raut) Staff Reporter : After cleaning of culverts by NMC citizens start dumping garbage that restricts flow of water in Nag river in low lying areas NMC will conduct year-long cleaning and repairing work near culverts Conservation of water bodies in city depends on joint contribution by its civic administration and the citizens. Normally we blame the cityfathers for everything bad happening in the city. The Hitavada ran a series of stories in the month of May on poor condition of Nag river and explained how civic body was initiating the cleaning work and maintaining the river at different locations. During monsoon water-logging in low lying areas in the city is a common phenomenon. The cleaning process takes place every year yet water-logging after heavy rains is witnessed in many areas. However Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) mostly ignores to clean the culverts at different places in the city. The shopkeepers passers-by and residents dump plastic bags thermocol and other garbage in Nag river which causes choking under the culverts at different places. On Sunday The Hitavada revisit the spots and found that NMC cleaned the under culverts at Mor Bhavan Panchasheel Square Tilak Nagar and Ramdaspeth areas recently but still the garbage is restricting the water flow of Nag river at many places. But the question is. Does the administration should only be blamed for bad condition of Nag river? The answer is No. As a citizen of Nagpur every individual should come forward and try to maintain cleanliness of the river by avoiding to dump garbage in it. Every individual should make aware others about cleanliness of the river. One should stop others to dump waste in the water body. “Normally we use the small poclain machines to clean the garbage under the culverts. we have decided to conduct year-long cleanliness and repairing drive near culverts to maintain the flow of the river” Mohd Israil Engineer River and Lake Rejuvenation Project NMC told The Hitavada. The Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) in the city is working hard to stop citizens for dumping garbage in water bodies and also penalising those who were caught red-handed. But the public participation to make city clean is essential and every individual should co-operate with the administration in this regard said Israil. Israil also appealed NGOs of the city to come forward and educate citizens for making the river clean. “Flow of sewage water and solid waste are two major factors that transformed Nag river into an open drainage. Administration should work to treat the sewage water before releasing it in the river and public should come forward and stop dumping solid waste in the water body. These two initiatives will help to save the public money which is going to be invest in the name of rejuvenation of Nag river in coming days” said an environmentalist.
