Wildlife Crime Control Bureau initiates volunteer schemeStaff Reporter :Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has initiated a novel scheme to encourage the participation of wildlife enthusiasts in the country in wildlife protection and conservation. Under the 'WCCB Volunteers Scheme' the WCCB intends to enrol volunteers to render assistance in 'collection of information on wildlife crime capacity building awareness generation' etc. The 'WCCB Volunteers Scheme' has been initiated to ensure augmentation of the existing resources of WCCB. The candidates applying for enrolment as WCCB Volunteers are required to 'assist' the designated enforcement officers and 'supplement WCCB field presence for the duties assigned'. WCCB is a statutory body constituted by Government of India to combat organised wildlife crime in the country.

Wildlife Crime Control Bureau initiates volunteer scheme Staff Reporter : Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has initiated a novel scheme to encourage the participation of wildlife enthusiasts in the country in wildlife protection and conservation. Under the WCCB Volunteers Scheme the WCCB intends to enrol volunteers to render assistance in collection of information on wildlife crime capacity building awareness generation etc. The WCCB Volunteers Scheme has been initiated to ensure augmentation of the existing resources of WCCB. For due to enormity of tasks it is expected to perform its existing resources are turning out to be inadequate. The volunteers are expected to collect information on wildlife crime and activities of wildlife criminals and pass it on to WCCB or other enforcement agencies for action assist State Forest Department officers in capacity building of stakeholders and generate awareness and also to conduct public education campaigns on wildlife wildlife crime and relevant policies and laws. Women also are encouraged to apply. The scheme will be reviewed after a period of five years or earlier if need is felt. The candidates applying for enrolment as WCCB Volunteers are required to assist the designated enforcement officers and supplement WCCB field presence for the duties assigned. As per the norms all Indian nationals above the age of 18 years are eligible to apply for enrolment as volunteers for a period of two years. WCCB has invited applications till July 16 either by email to [email protected] or by post to Deputy Director (I&C) WCCB New Delhi. WCCB is a statutory body constituted by Government of India to combat organised wildlife crime in the country. Headquartered at Delhi WCCB has five regional offices namely at Delhi Kolkata Mumbai Chennai and Jabalpur and three sub-regional offices at Guwahati Amritsar and Cochin. The role of WCCB becomes all the more important considering that about eight per cent of the known global species of flora and fauna are found in Indian landscape. However this biodiversity has been under stress from poaching and illegal trade in endangered species it has been recognised officially. As per the mandate under Section 38 (Z) of Wildlife Protection Act the WCCB has to collect and collate Intelligence related to organised wildlife crime activities and to disseminate the same to State and other enforcement agencies for immediate action so as to apprehend the criminals and to establish a centralised wildlife crime data-bank. Further it has to co-ordinate actions by various officers State Governments and other authorities; implement obligations under various International conventions nad protocols in force; assist the authorities concerned in foreign countries; develop infrastructure and build capacity for scientific and professional investigation into wildlife crimes; and advice the Government on related issues.
